Formed in 2005, the Chiaroscuro Quartet performs music of the Classical period on gut strings with an historical and equally fresh approach. Their lithe, gracious and dynamic playing combined with an extraordinary committed ensemble mentality forms its unique sound, which is highly acclaimed by audiences all over Europe.
Recent engagements included their enthusiastically received debut concert at the Edinburgh International Festival, performances in Germany, France, Belgium and The Netherlands and their appearance on stage of London’s new chamber music venue Wanamaker Theatre. In 2013, the Chiaroscuro Quartet was awarded with the Förderpreis of the German radio station Deutschlandfunk in collaboration with Musikfest Bremen where it will be returning in summer 2014 for its opening night. Other highlights in the past took the ensemble to London’s Wigmore Hall, York Early Music Centre, Auditorium du Louvre Paris, Théâtre du Jeu-de-Paume in Aix-en-Provence, Grand Théâtre de Dijon, Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon and a residency in Aldeburgh.
Following their critically acclaimed debut album in 2011, the Quartet released its second recording for the French label Aparté in April 2013. The CD, including Beethoven’s Quartetto serioso,
Mozart’s Quartet K. 428 and Adagio and Fugue K. 546, received four out of four possible f in the French magazine Télérama and was awarded the highest possible rating for its interpretation in Germany’s major chamber music magazine Ensemble. A third recording will be released in autumn 2014 including Mendelssohn’s No.2, op. 13 in A-minor.
The Chiaroscuro Quartet works regularly with french clarinettist Nicolas Baldeyrou and cellist Christophe Coin. Projects with pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout are planned for 2015/2016.
Since 2009 the Quartet has held a residency at Port-Royal-des-Champs dedicated to Mozart quartets.
